The Humble Petition of William Armstrong Sheweth; that your petitioner entered the service of his country at the commencement of the Revolutionary war as a private soldier in Captain Benjamin Kilgore’s Company of militia Cavalry, General Williamson’s [Andrew Williamson’s] Brigade. That your petitioner was on the Cherokee expedition in said Brigade in the year 1776. Was in three hard-fought battles one of which is known by the name of the ring-fight [August 12, 1776] 2 . That after the termination of this expedition your petitioner joined Captain Porter’s Company of North Carolina militia and was at the battle of Ramseur’s Mill [June 20, 1780] where he was wounded with two Balls one of which severely shattered his right leg, the other was received in his left shoulder and broke his collarbone. That your petitioner was in the service of his Country until the time of his being wounded. That when your petitioner entered the service of the State for the Cherokee expedition he was promised by his commanding officer a bounty of six hundred and forty acres of land, which he has never received, nor has he ever received a cent from the state for his services and sufferings.
